*A 52-year-old woman with incidental lesion in retroperitoneum
What is the most likely diagnosis?
1-Retroperitoneal sarcoma
2-Lymphoma
3-Retroperitoneal schwannoma
4-Metastatic lesion
Answer
Answer: Retroperitoneal schwannoma
Case Discussion:
A well circumscribed rounded well defined mass is seen in retroperitoneum medial to right kidney. It has calcification and cystic degeneration. It shows heterogeneous enhancement.
Excisional biopsy of this lesion revealed benign encapsulated schwannoma which rarely occurs at the retroperitoneal location.
Schwannomas are benign tumors of peripheral nerves and arise from schwann cells (1).They commonly arise at head and neck regions in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (1). They can show intense enhancement, fatty degeneration and cystic changes (1).
